The classic telling would have us cast Pandora as a naive girl with a box, created to serve as nothing more than a deceptive prize in a rivalry between gods. A girl who foolishly let loose the evils of the world on mankind, bringing misery and suffering to the original humans before finally seeing the error of her ways and releasing hope, too.

But what if we changed that…

Replace the box with an amphora, as originally depicted.
Replace the contents with something more meaningful.
Replace the foolish girl with a curious heroine.
Replace the tale, perhaps, with the truth?

Pandora was no mere pawn in a game between gods. She was a curious and powerful woman, acting with her own agency to explore the unknown and discover the possibilities of a new world. Perhaps the gods had locked the amphora away to deny human beings what lay within? And what about the contents of the jar itself? Far from the simple depiction of popular myth.

What hid away inside was the new. It was the essence of human life itself—because what is life if not the culmination of all of our experiences? Happy and sad. Love and hate. Pleasure and pain. Light and dark. Good and evil. Without that balance, our lives wouldn’t mean very much at all.

And we might just owe all of that to Pandora—a feminine symbol of life, curiosity and meaningful creation. Like all women.
